Nieuw Smithsonian museum in Washington vertelt verhaal van de Afro-Amerikanen

De jurk van Rosa Parks, een slavenhut uit South Carolina, de rode Cadillac van Chuck Berry, de trompet van Louis Armstrong, de bokshandschoenen van Muhammad Ali, campagnegadgets van Barack Obama, een verkoopbewijs van 600 dollar voor een 16-jarig meisje, een jumpsuit van James Brown....

Het is maar een kleine greep uit alle objecten die te zijn zien in het gloednieuwe National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC), gevestigd aan de Mall in Washington. Het is het negentiende museum van het Smithsonian Instituut.

President Obama opende het museum op 24 september met de woorden: "By knowing this other story we better understand ourselves and each other. It binds us together. It reaffirms that all of us are America, that African-American history is not somehow separate from our larger American story. It is central to the American story."
