Emma Watson gaat actief aan de slag voor meer duurzame modewereld

De Britse actrice Emma Watson wordt lid van de raad van bestuur van modegroep Kering, die onder andere Gucci in de portefeuille heeft. Ze wordt de voorzitter van het duurzaamheidscomité.

Kering, het moederschip van modelabels zoals Yves Saint Laurent, Gucci, Balenciaga en Alexander McQueen, wil een stapje verder gaan in z’n duurzaamheidsinspanningen. Emma Watson, de dertigjarige Britse Harry Potter-actrice, staat te trappelen om daarbij te helpen. Naast gendergelijkheid is duurzaamheid immers een van de thema’s waar de actrice al jaren voor strijdt. Op de rode loper straalt ze steevast in een ethisch en ecologisch ontwerp en in het dagelijkse leven kiest ze zo veel mogelijk voor vintage of checkt ze de rating-app Good On You vooraleer ze een nieuw stuk koopt.

Impact op de toekomst

Door lid te worden van de raad van bestuur bij Kering heeft ze een meer directe lijn met de mode-industrie en hoopt ze ook een actievere rol te spelen in het verduurzamen van de sector. ‘Duurzaamheid draait voor mij om het effect van de inspanningen die we vandaag de dag leveren op onze gemeenschappelijke toekomst,’ vertelt Watson aan Vogue.

‘Als jongste lid van de raad hoop ik een invloed te hebben op beslissingen die een impact zullen hebben op de toekomstige generaties en de wereld die we voor hen achterlaten.’ Voor Watson is het ook duidelijk dat opkomen voor een eerlijke mode-industrie ook een feministische daad is. ‘Ongeveer tachtig procent van de kledingarbeiders wereldwijd is een vrouw tussen 18 en 35,’ klinkt het.

Watson wil haar rol ook gebruiken om te luisteren en andere mensen een stem en een platform te geven. ‘Als ik wat stiller ben, wil dat niet zeggen dat ik minder activistisch ben geworden. Ik wil mijn werk gewoon op een andere manier doen: minder rode lopers en meer meetings! Ik wil deze unieke tijden aangrijpen om verandering te omarmen.’

Actie nodig

Kering timmerde al langer aan een meer duurzame koers. In 2019 maakte de Franse president Emmanuel Macron gebruik van de G7 in Biarritz om een ‘fashion pact’ af te sluiten. François-Henri Pinault, voorzitter en CEO van Kering, werd gevraagd om modespelers en textielbedrijven samen te brengen om dit pact te ondertekenen. Concreet houdt dit in dat meer dan dertig bekende modebedrijven beloven om de negatieve impact op het klimaat, de biodiversiteit en de oceanen te verminderen.

Jammer genoeg is de charter van Macron niet bindend en worden de bedrijven dus niet wettelijk afgestraft wanneer ze zich niet aan hun beloftes houden. Hopelijk is de aanstelling van Emma Watson als voorzitter van het duurzaamheidscomité alvast een teken dat de Keringmerken geen achterpoortjes zullen zoeken om ervan onder te muizen.
